English Josep Maria Espinàs (Barcelona, 1927) is a versatile writer with a broad and faithful readership. His work ranges from the novel, to travel writing, works dealing with matters of public concern, books reporting on different matters, volumes of memoirs through to the huge number of journalistic articles he has published in the newspapers Avui and El Periódico. He was one of the promoters of the "Nova Cançó" (the 1960s movement creating of new songs in Catalan as a form of cultural expression during the Franco dictatorship) and a founder of the "Setze Jutges" (a group of musicians created in 1961 to promote the "Nova Cançó" movement) while he has also presented a number of interview programmes on television. He was awarded the Sant Jordi (Saint George) Prize in 1961 for his novel "L'últim replà" (The Last Landing on the Stairway). His work has been translated into German, English, Basque, Castilian, French, Italian, Japanese, Dutch, Portuguese and Czech. In 1990, the publishing house Ediciones La Campana, of which he is cofounder along with Isabel Martí, began to publish his Complete Works. The Generalitat (Autonomous Government) of Catalonia awarded him with the Saint George Cross in 1983 and the National Culture Prize in 1995 in the written journalism section. Su creación literaria abarca desde la novela hasta la crónica de viajes, pasando por obras de interés cívico, libros reportaje, volúmenes de memorias y un ingente número de artículos periodísticos publicados en los diarios Avui y El Periódico. Fue impulsor de la Nova Cançó y uno de los fundadores de los Setze Jutges. Ha conducido varios programas de entrevistas en televisión. Ganó el Premi Sant Jordi (1961) con la novela L'últim replà. Tiene obra traducida al alemán, checo, español, eusquera, francés, inglés, italiano, japonés, neerlandés y portugués. A partir de 1990 comenzó a publicar su Obra Completa en Edicions La Campana, de cuyo sello es cofundador junto con Isabel Martí. La Generalitat de Catalunya le concedió la Creu de Sant Jordi (1983) y el Premi Nacional de Cultura (1995) en la modalidad de periodismo escrito.
