Eduard J. Verger

Eduard J. Verger (Carlet, 1949) is a poet, translator, and literary critic. He studied Philosophy and Arts at the University of Valencia and, since 1980, has been working as a linguistic specialist in the Valencia Administration. He founded and was editor of the literary review Cairell (1979-1981) and, with Joan Fuster, was director of the collection “Biblioteca d’Autors Valencians”, of the Valencia Institute for Studies and Research (IVEI)-Institució Alfons el Magnànim from 1981 to 1997. In 1975 he received the Viola Award in the Catalan language literary competition, the “Jocs Florals” in Caracas. He has published the collections of poetry Com si morís (1986), Tres peces apòcrifes (1999), and Terra pensada (2003).

He has translated from French works by Stéphane Mallarmé, Paul Éluard, Jean Tardieu and Yves Bonnefoy. His translation from Hungarian, together with Kálmán Faluba, of poems by Attila Józseff (Poemes, 1987) was awarded the 1988 “Cavall Verd” prize of the Associació d’Escriptors en Llengua Catalana for Poetry Translation. He also translated into Spanish poems by Joan Roís de Corella (Poesías (2004) and, from Chinese, the collection Ebri de lluna by Li Bai.

He publishes poems and articles in periodicals like Reduccions, L'Espill, Saó, Caplletra, and Caràcters as well as in dailies including Diario de Valencia, Levante-EMV, and El País.

He is a member of the Associació d’Escriptors en Llengua Catalana (AELC – Association of Catalan Language Writers).
