1919-1998

English

Joan Brossa (Barcelona, 1919-1989). Poet, playwright and artist. He was one of the founders of the "Dau al Set" artistic movement, and creator of experimental works that defied the boundaries between different artistic disciplines.

His literary work, of exceptional dimensions, features experimentation with language and a great wealth of techniques and styles, from classical rhymes to conceptual poetry, surrealist theatre to experimental cinema scripts. This continuous metalinguistic investigation process led him progressively to visual poetry, sculpture and performance art.

Only at its end his career was fully recognized, with numerous translations of his work and several awards and honors that acknowledged him as one of the most important figures of the 20th Century literature and visual arts. He died a few month before turning 80 years old, when several hommages were being prepared.

Joan Brossa was appointed a honorary member of Associació d'Escriptors en Llengua Catalana.
