Arthur Terry
1927-2004

Nicholas Round

"This quiet Englishman meant much to Catalans as an interpreter of their culture to the world and themselves. No other British scholar can have spoken for another nation's culture with such recognised authority."

(Nicholas Round: "Arthur Terry: British scholar and erudite voice of Catalan culture", The Guardian (Londres), 19 de febrer de 2004)

"He kept his department at a correct and formal distance from the Franco government’s cultural agencies. But I once saw him pull from the shelves of the University Library a volume published in Barcelona in the 1940s, which fell open at its fulsome dedication to the Caudillo. Arthur made a face, and gave the thing a robust two-fingered salute before returning it to its shelf. In its own way, his conscious setting out of the cultural case for treating Catalonia as a serious presence in the world was, of course, intensely and properly political."
