Carles Duarte (Barcelona, 1959) is a poet and linguist. The main themes in his poetry, in which the elements of the Mediterranean landscape and its cultural references are ever-present, are tenderness, dreaming and oblivion. His work has been translated into several languages and has been awarded, among others, the Rosa Leveroni, the Vila de Martorell, the Serra d'Or and the Crítica Catalana prizes. He is also a Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

He has published over 40 books of poetry, such as El Somni (2000), El Silenci (2001), El centre del temps (2003), Tríptic hebreu (2004), Els immortals (2004) or Alba del vespre (2013). His poetry has been compiled in the volumes La tierra y el sueño. La terra i el somni. Antologia 1984-2000 (2000), in a bilingual Catalan-Spanish edition, and in S'acosta el mar. Poesia 1984-2009 (2010). He has also published several works of fiction.

He has worked inter alia with the painter Antonio Hervás, the sculptors Guido Dettoni and Manuel Cusachs, the photographers Francesc Guitart and Kim Castells, and the singers Dounia Hédreville, Josep Tero, Antonio Placer, Franca Masu, Elena Ledda and Mariona Sagarra. As a linguist he has worked with professors Joan Coromines and Antoni M. Badia i Margarit and has published books on historical linguistics as well as other specialised works on language.

He was Secretary-General of the President’s Department in the Catalan (Generalitat) Autonomous Government (1999-2003). He was Vice President of Associació d'Escriptors en Llengua Catalana (AELC, Association of Catalan Language Writers), President of the Recvll de Blanes literary awards and Director of Lluís Carulla Foundation and President of the Consell Nacional de la Cultura i de les Arts (CoNCA, National Council for Culture and Arts). He is director of the Institució Cultural del CIC and President of Institució Francesc de B. Moll.

He is a member of Asssociació d'Escriptors en Llengua Catalana (AELC, Association of Catalan Language Writers).
