Jordi Bergonyó

English

Jordi Bergonyó (Barcelona, 1944) is a playwright.

After a childhood marked by economic hardship, he came into contact with the world of theatre through the sociocultural and sports association Lluïsos de Gràcia where, after 1962, he worked as a stagehand and subsequently as an actor and assistant director. Between 1968 and 1969 he completed a course in radio scriptwriting at Ràdio Joventut de Barcelona, after which he worked professionally with Ràdio Barcelona. His career covers several kinds of work including stained-glass work, advertising graphics, and a range of activities—text writing, translation and editing—in the publishing domain. He taught himself how to write Catalan and, in 1973, made his name as a playwright when he was awarded the Josep M. de Sagarra Prize for his play Por (1974). In 1977 he received the Santiago Rusiñol Prize of Sitges for his play A Buster Keaton (1984). He has also written the plays Història (1978), La substitució (1995), and L’estranya presència dels déus (2006).

Difficult to classify, Jordi Bergonyó’s work has a strong ideological component and is situated among works of fringe theatre of each epoch.

He is an honorary member of the Associació d’Escriptors en Llengua Catalana (AELC – Association of Catalan Language Writers (AELC – Association of Catalan Language Writers).
