English

Gabriel Galmés, (Manacor, 1962 - 2001) had a degree in English Philology and was a writer, translator, teacher and newspaper columnist. Despite his early death at thirty-nine years of age, he is widely recognised as being one of the best Mallorcan writers of the second half of the twentieth century.

Notable among his books are Parfait Amour (1986), a collection of short stories that were to make him known as a writer, El rei de la casa (King of the House, 1988), La vida perdurable (Enduring Life, 1992), El rei de la selva (King of the Forest, 1996) and Una cara manllevada (A Borrowed Face), which was published in 2000, shortly before his death.

Galmés was also a playwright and translator with the Iguana Theatre Group and frequently wrote for the newspapers Avui, El País and Diario de Mallorca, where he discussed a range of matters of topical concern in Mallorcan life and society. He taught in secondary schools and at the Balearic Islands University (UIB).

His death in 2001 cut short what was, for many people, a very brilliant and promising career in literature and in the domain of culture, both in the Balearic Islands and in Catalonia in general.
