Jaume Bofill i Mates (Guerau de Liost)
1878-1933

English

Guerau de Liost (Olot, 1878 – Barcelona, 1933) was the literary pen name of Jaume Bofill i Mates. This poet and politician noted for his conservative catalanist stance was the founder of Acció Catalana and held a number of public service positions throughout his professional life, including councilman for the City of Barcelona and representative to the regional and Spanish parliaments.

His work as a poet had decidedly country roots. Among the most noted are his books La Muntanya d'Ametistes (Amethyst Mountain – 1908) and Sàtires (Satires – 1927). But also worth mentioning are his books of political essays, above all those that reveal his personal views, which share many similarities with those of Francesc Cambó.

He was a follower of the linguistic theories of contemporary Pompeu Fabra. Along with his friend Josep Carner, Liost was a dedicated Europeanist, keenly attentive to the political and cultural innovations that were coming from the other side of the Pyrenees.
